Careful Grooming Makes Pets Look Frickin’ Great!

Filed under: Pets — Roberta Foxtree @ 10:39 am
To look after your pet properly, grooming is an essential measure. Without proper care to the coat and nails, a dog can soon be looking wild and also potentially suffering from various health problems.

Your pet’s fur is a key area for care. Any owner of a Bearded Collie will know how dirty they can get in adverse weather or winter. What you might not know is that a tangled coat could help a flea infestation take hold, so as you see grooming is really important.

Outdoor dogs, especially long haired ones will have their owner’s work cut out for them in the less clement seasons. A romp in the rain, mud and wind will quickly give your dog a ‘bad hair day’ so prepare yourself for regular attention to his coat..  dog clothes

Keeping your dog clean doesn’t have to be a trauma though, with an entire range of great products which lend themselves so well to keep your pet looking pretty.

Stray hair from your pet can provoke allergies, but you can combat this at the source by using a FURminator. This patented innovation gently removes, without cutting, the sub-coat, and your dog will think he is just having a massage.

It has been designed with an ergonomic handle making it easy to grip and utilize, and does not affect the topcoat. With regular use this excellent tool can reduce shedding by up to 90%, which may help with allergies that many people suffer from.

Another cute brush is the Kong Zoom Groom Brush for Dogs which comes in two great colors. As your dog is enjoying a fantastic massage, you are secretly removing loose hair thanks to the product’s design.

Your dog will enjoy the attention, and the brush is so gentle it can be used on the tummy without causing your dog discomfort - on the contrary he will love it. Use the brush in a circular motion for best results.

If you have ever tried trimming your dog’s nails at home, you will be so happy to see the Master Grooming Tools Guillotine Nail Clippers. Blunt blades and a slippery grip are in the past thanks to the sleek design and ergonomic modelling. Of course your dog may take a little convincing, but you will both be won over in no time when you see how simple it is.

Scented dog products add the finishing touch to a dog’s bathing ritual. There is a full range of dog shampoo and conditioners from 8in1 with heavenly scents and best of all they are alcohol free. Thanks to the nurturing power of Aloe Vera, these products will enhance your dog’s coat in the most natural way.

If you are the proud owner of a white dog, eye wipes might be of interest too. This is especially true if you show your dog where the slightest neglect in grooming may mean losing a place. Your dog is a testimony to you as an owner, so make sure your are happy with how he looks!

Intestinal Worms in Cats: An Overview

Filed under: Pets — Kurt Schmitt @ 1:23 am

Worms in cats are a common occurrence, especially in kittens, and your vet will test for them once per year. Testing is done by way of a stool sample.

Worms are parasites that feed off of their host. In this case, the host is your cat. There are a number of cat parasites, but there are three major players when it comes to intestinal worms.

Roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms, are the main types of worms found in cats. During annual check ups, your vet should do a fecal exam for diagnosis.

Typically, cats that share litter boxes will all be afflicted. A fecal sample from one cat, therefore, is usually sufficient to determine if an infestation exists in the home. By the same token, it is recommended that treatment be given to all cats sharing litter boxes if one of them is infected.

Below is an overview on each of the major types of worms found in cats.

Roundworms - Roundworms (Toxocara Cati) have a spaghetti-like look to them, and you usually won’t see them unless your cat vomits. Roundworm is common in kittens, who can become infected via their mothers, who may be asymptomatic. The mother cat may have the encysted form of the worm which lies dormant. Don’t be surprised if your vet wants to worm your kitten 2-3 times, even if the test results are negative.

Mature cats often develop a natural immunity against roundworm. Adult cats, therefore, do not usually exhibit symptoms due to this parasite.

Hookworms - Hookworms hook themselves to the cat’s intestinal wall. Rather than get their nutrition from what the cat takes in, hookworms are tissue feeders. Because of this, they can cause blood loss which may result in your cat developing anemia. In addition, a cat with this worm may also experience weight loss, poor hair coat and intestinal distress. Luckily, most of the medications that are used to treat roundworms will also take care of hookworms. At least two treatments are needed to get rid of hookworm.

Tapeworms - Tapeworms are made up of a series of segments containing eggs. When the segments drop off the worm, they are passed in the stool. When they dry out, they look like grains of rice, which you’ll sometimes see in areas your cat frequents or around the your cat’s anus. If your cat experiences anal irritation and/or exhibits excessive licking, this worm may be present.

It’s important to control fleas. The flea ingests the tapeworm eggs and then your cat eats the flea. The tapeworm then lives in the intestinal tract of your cat and then produces, you guessed it, more tapeworms.

Usually these worms do not cause any visible symptoms of illness in your cat. You cannot properly address the tapeworm issue without also addressing the flea problem, or you risk the possibility that your cat will get them again.

Intestinal worms in cats can be present without any sign of visible illness. Since cat parasites put undue stress on your kitty, you should do what you can to keep his/her immune system strong. That includes not only regular vet visits, but also high quality food, regular exercise, and the room to explore.

How To Identify Labrador Health Problems

Filed under: Pets — Fiona Kelly @ 1:06 am
by Brooke Sunderland

When people get a Labrador they are not only getting one of the most popular and intelligent breeds of dog available, but also they are also getting one of the healthier breeds of dogs as well. While there are Labrador health problems to be on the look out for if you get your dog medical attention when it needs it and make sure it gets to the vet for regular checkups then there is no reason why the average Labrador should not live twelve to fifteen very happy years.

Knowing what to look for when looking for Labrador health problems is extremely important. If your dog is having difficulty walking then it may be experiencing a chronic disorder known as hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is when the hip joints are not properly formed and are causing the dog pain. They can be treated but the condition does worsen over time so if you notice difficulty walking get your dog to the vet right away.

Your vet may come to realize that your dog does not have hip dysplasia at all because Labradors are also prone to other developmental Labrador health problems that can affect the joints. One of the more common is the elbow joint and this can also cause your dog a great deal of pain when it tries to walk so be sure to get your dog to the vet right away to get the surgery it needs to relieve the pain of this chronic condition.

Labradors are also known to get simple problems such as eye infections. If you notice excess fluid in your dog’s eyes then get them to the vet for medication right away. Eye infections can get complicated by your dog cleaning their eyes constantly to relieve the infection so be sure that you do not wait on the eye condition and get the antibiotics and other medications your dog needs to relieve its discomfort as soon as possible.

A constant attempt to clean an infected eye can lead to many more problems so get the problem addressed immediately.

If they had their choice your Labrador would eat all day long so be sure to regulate their diet properly and get them the exercise they need to stay healthy and happy.

While Labrador health problems may not be as common as they are in other breeds it is still up to the owner to be sure to tend to their dog’s needs whenever they arise.

Make sure your dog is on a healthy diet, get it plenty of exercise every day, and make regular trips to the vet to insure that you and your dog enjoy many healthy and happy years together.

Yorkie Breeders You Should Avoid

Filed under: Pets — Fiona Kelly @ 1:32 am
by Susan Bailey

There is just as much to know about how to spot a bad Yorkie breeder as there is in spotting a good one and the more information you can arm yourself with the better off you will be in making this all important decision. Always make sure you ask the right questions and know what answers you are looking for so you can tell if the Yorkie breeder you are talking to is one that you want to do business with or not.

A breeder that is not listed with a national breeder registry is a breeder that has not committed to a set of tested breeding standards that are designed to help breed the happiest and healthiest dogs possible. If you ask a potential Yorkie breeder if they are listed with a national breeder registry and it turns out that they are not then you are probably going to want to move on to a breeder that is listed.

You will never find a better source for unbiased information in your search for a Yorkie breeder than what you will find with your vet. Your vet is just as concerned about the potential health of your pet and if they have any warnings to give you about any particular breeders then they will let you know. If you do not have a vet yet then the breeder searching process is the perfect time to start a relationship with one.

It is difficult to tell the complete story about someone from a brief meeting and that is why you do your homework. One of the places you should ask about your prospective Yorkie breeders is with local law enforcement. If local law enforcement has anything negative to say about a breeder on your list then it is safe to say that you should avoid that breeder.

You can also use your own intuition when it comes to choosing Yorkie breeders and just spend time talking to all the candidates to see how they answer questions.

If any particular breeder makes you feel uncomfortable like you may not be able to stay in touch with them, or they simply do not know their business very well, then you will want to stay away from that breeder and move on to other breeders on your list.

The relationship with your Yorkie breeder is a very important one for you and your dog so make sure you take the time to do the homework necessary to eliminate the bad breeders.

Remember that you are not only buying your pet from the breeder but you will need to stay in contact with them for many years to come so keep that in mind in your search.

Golden Retriever Grooming For Coat And Skin Health

Filed under: Pets — Carol Matthews @ 1:17 am
by Carol Matthews

Golden Retriever grooming must be started as early as possible. Even though the puppy may not need the grooming yet, you must groom anyway because, if groomed regularly, your puppy will come to enjoy grooming and be familiarized with Golden Retriever grooming supplies.

Golden Retrievers shed in abundance. You can control the amount of dog hair in your home by regular grooming. During shedding season, groom your dog daily. Brushing your dog’s coat thoroughly will take up to half an hour so be prepared to devote time to Golden Retriever grooming. Golden Retrievers are prone to the skin condition known as hot spots. Involve a groomer whom you trust, if you need assistance.

Matting should be cared for immediately through proper Golden Retriever grooming. For some feathery-coated Golden Retrievers, resting for long periods can produce a mat. The typical locations for matting are the ears, rear, tail and feathery sections. For dogs with feathering, a mat problem can result overnight. A mat will enlarge by pulling in nearby hair into itself. This can produce painful spots that are prone to irritation. Wetting the mat worsens the condition by pulling the hair tighter. Mats are inviting hiding spots for fleas. Regular Golden Retriever grooming must be performed regularly to avoid matting problems.

Once a mat starts, it will irritate the dog and eventually become painful as it pulls more hair into itself as the mat grows in size. A mat can cause skin irritations if it is not removed. In addition, fleas will migrate to mat spots. The places, where most matting occurs, are behind the ears, rear, tail and at feathery spots. Mats can happen overnight to some dogs with feathering. If matting is occurring regularly, you will have to brush the area frequently or trim the hair regularly.

You will need a few Golden Retriever grooming supplies to deal with mats. A mat must be carefully untangled with a wide toothed comb by starting at the edges and then working into the mat. Plain water will tighten the mat so you may use oil or detangle formula conditioner to untangle the mat. A mat can be cut away easily and safely with a mat breaker. Try to avoid using sharp edged scissors on a mat, use rounded edged scissor if necessary. Use the services of a groomer as necessary. With the right Golden Retriever grooming supplies, you can groom your dog well.

Regular brushing is a part of correct Golden Retriever grooming. You can choose two main brushes for your Golden Retriever grooming supplies needs. The slicker brush is versatile. The wide head and short bristles, set wide, are useful for shedding and regular brushing of smooth and feathered coats. The pin brush has longer pins, set wide, is useful for brushing feathered portions. The pin brush will reduce shedding as well. Regular brushing will remove any particles and dirt from the coat.

Brush your dog thoroughly before a bath or wetting the coat. Tangles tighten with water. A vegetable oil or detangle solution can help to detangle tangles. Avoid too much bathing or using detergent based shampoo because of undercoat fall out or skin irritation. Brush dirt from the underside and legs for spot cleaning and wet as necessary.

During regular Golden Retriever grooming, check for hot spots while using a flea comb to inspect the skin beneath the undercoat and to detangle the undercoat. Gently check and clean your dog’s ears and nails once a week. Trim nails as necessary as a part of your Golden Retriever grooming schedule.

What Makes The Miniature Pinscher Dog A Great Pet?

by Ned D’Agostino

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear about the Miniature Pinscher? Many think he’s a miniature Doberman. Others think he’s simply yappy and tends to bite. Owners of this breed can tell you none of that is true.

In actuality, the Min Pin is fun loving, loyal and intelligent. He’s earned his nickname as the King of the Toys.

There’s no question that this breed has a bit of an attitude. They are courageous well beyond what their 10 pounds would indicate. They seem to think they weigh much more than that. You’ll notice it in their proud walk with their high steps and head held high as well.

Combine the pride with the Miniature Pinscher’s fierce loyalty to his owner and his tremendous courage, and you have a great watchdog. But in all fairness, they can also be a handful.

Min Pins can become almost tyrannical, running your house for you. If you own this breed you simply need to establish early on that you are the one in charge. Some Min Pin owners may have trouble disciplining their pet simply because he’s so cute. Don’t make this mistake. You’ll find that because this breed is so intelligent that training is fairly easy.

Take the time to train him properly and your Min Pin will be an fantastic pet. They are loving and exceedingly loyal, but they are also a blast to watch play. If you love to laugh (and who doesn’t?), then the Miniature Pinscher is a great breed for you.

Remember we mentioned that the Miniature Pinscher is good with children. There’s a catch. Because the breed is very sturdy and of course playful, kids can have a tendency to play too rough. Min Pins aren’t fragile, but they are only 10 pounds. Children need to keep this in mind because as we said, they certainly act like they weigh more.

And there are very few breeds that would be considered more loyal than a Miniature Pinscher. He will quickly become attached to everyone in your family, although he does have a tendency to become very attached to one person in particular.

If you want a pet to entertain you, love you, be loyal to you, and just be fun to be around, the Miniature Pinscher would be a great choice. The breed remains very playful even into its old age. You may think you need a lot of energy to keep up with them, and to a certain extent that’s true. But they love to play by themselves with you watching. And while they do need exercise, because of their size they can get plenty of it just running around your home or apartment.

And when play time is over they’ll be happy to sit there right next to you. So if you want a family pet that’s loyal, fun, smart and easy to care for, the Miniature Pinscher may be just the breed you’re looking for.

Training A Dog - The Principles

Filed under: Pets — Joseph Then @ 4:18 am
by James Randy

Naturally, every pet owner would like their pet dog to behave and learn obedience so they train their dog either with the help of a handler or just by themselves. Unfortunately, not all pet trainings can be thought of as successful. Most of the time training fails because there are some pointers that may have been overlooked. Let’s talk about dog training and the issues involved with the training.

To train your pet dog, there are methods or techniques involved. Once just doesn’t act like he’s the boss for your pet dog to obey. Common sense dictates that the understanding of pets and owner are very far apart, so don’t expect your dog to obey you especially in the beginning.

So what are the first steps? Simple. For new dog owners, you have to remember these three principles. They are: reinforcement, punishment and extinction. By mastering these three simple principles, you will be on your way to training your dog to be more obedient.

What do I mean by reinforcement? It is the dog’s reaction to the trainer where behavior either becomes better or worst by means of specific actions. Let me explain further. There are two categories of reinforcement. They are: positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement is about giving rewards or praise. If your dog behaves or obeys you, then you reward or praise your pet. This good behavior remains because the dog understands it will be rewarded for as long as it obeys or behaves.

Negative reinforcement happens when the trainer removes an unpleasant situation to make the dog obey. An example of this is when you want to teach your dog to sit. I am sure your dog will not budge if tell it to sit. What you can do is that you can pressure on the collar and release the pressure once the dog obeys you.

The next principle that we are talking about is the punishment principle. Again, there are positive and negative punishment. A punishment is deemed as a positive punishment when the trainer does something unpleasant and thus it results in the dog’s negative bahaviour to decrease. A negative punishment on the other hand is when a punishment is handed out, the positive behavior is diminished or eliminated.

The last principle we are going to talk about is the extinction principle. Extinction is about total elimination of a behavior. This happens when a certain behavious is not reinforced and thus, resulting it to be wliminated or extinct. For example, your dog keeps whining but you keep your stand and not allow it to have its way. Your dog will learn that whining will do him no good so it stops.

For most people, they believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. Yes, it may be for some but this might not work for the others. So before taking on any of the principles discussed, it is still better to have an assessment of your dog’s behavior prior to any training. In this way, you will know which of the principles would give you the best chance of success when it comes to training your dog.

Is It Possible to Control Pet Odor Through Pet Spa Products?

Filed under: Pets — Amy Nutt @ 3:11 am
by Amy Nutt

Fido may be man`s best friend, but the odor sure isn`t! Whether you have a cat or a dog, you`ll find that pet odor can be overwhelming at times. Many people turn to pet spa products in an attempt to get rid of this nasty smell, but do these products really work?

Pet spa products are usually specifically formulated to give your pet an odor makeover and get rid of unpleasant smells that might keep you from getting too close to your pet. Often they are quite effective, but you do need to watch what ingredients are in the dog products or cat products you use. Most of the pet shampoos, deodorizers and conditioners are made with a number of harsh ingredients that might not be so good for your pet.

The Downside of Chemical Pet Spa Products

Many of the pet spa products that are offered on today’s market are chock full of chemicals to get rid of smells, eliminate fleas, etc. While these are great benefits, the actual effect might not be what you are looking for.

What many pet owners don’t realize is that their pet may be sensitive to certain chemicals. It’s often difficult to know if this is the case, but your pet may be suffering in silence. Itchiness and agitation are signs that your dog or cat isn’t doing so well with the chemicals in the pet spa products being used. Sometimes these symptoms won`t appear until a little later and end up being mistaken for allergies to other things. Animals can also build up sensitivities to certain chemical s that are used over a long period of time, so it’s not usually a good idea to use anything that could cause irritation.

Even if your pet isn’t reacting to the chemicals, they aren’t necessarily a good idea. Do you really want to treat your best friend with substances containing something you can`t even pronounce?

Natural Pet Spa Products

Natural solutions to pet odor exist and they work just as well as the chemical laden pet spa products, but without the side effects. The use of natural ingredients and herbs is rapidly growing in popularity and quite a few pet owners are moving toward the all natural approach.

The advantages of going natural are many and you`ll find that your pet does far better without the extra ingredients that can cause problems both now and in the future. Your pet has no likelihood of developing an allergy to the pet spa product and the natural ingredients are often what the chemical version was based on, anyway!

Be sure to check the label on any product before using it on your pet. Often bottles that claim the ingredients are organic and natural still contain some chemicals. A brief scan of the ingredient list will let you know if that`s the case or not and you can treat your pet for bad odor without feeling guilty.

Look for pet products that contain herbs and essences to control and help reduce dog odor and to add shine. If you are looking for combination product to repel insects while getting rid of pet odor, there are natural methods of doing this, as well. Herbs like eucalyptus and lemon grass work well to combat both pests like fleas and those icky smells.

No one should have to tolerate nasty pet odors, but that doesn`t mean you need to treat your cat or dog with a harsh cleanser, either. Opt for natural pet spa products to get the job done . . . minus the chemicals.

Chihuahua Health Problems To Know About

Filed under: Pets — Sandra Dean @ 2:04 am
by Sandra Dean

Bringing a little Chihuahua into your family represents a lot of responsibility that you will have for the little dog. As a toy breed they are prone to many Chihuahua health problems and as a responsible owner it is up to you to familiarize yourself with potential symptoms as much as you can. You will need to know what is standard behavior for a Chihuahua and what classifies as a symptom to a Chihuahua health problem if you are going to truly care for your new pet.

You are going to want to have a long talk with your vet about what to look for in your Chihuahua before you bring the little dog home so that your vet can take you through normal Chihuahua behavior and what to look for if something is wrong. Not only can your vet help you, but also your breeder can also be a vast fountain of knowledge on the care of your Chihuahua and will probably give you information to take home.

Chihuahua health problems are like any other breed’s problems in that some will appear right when they are born and other conditions take time to develop or can be contracted over time. One condition of the Chihuahua is weak leg tendons and ligaments that cause the kneecap to float in and out of place on the dog’s leg. This can be very painful and if you notice that your Chihuahua is having difficulty walking at times then this could be the source of the problem and it requires medical attention for your Chihuahua from the vet immediately.

Another common Chihuahua health problem is that for the males their testicles do not drop and they need a vet to look at them. A normal Chihuahua male will have their testicles drop from their abdomen almost from birth or certainly by the time they reach adulthood. If this has not happened then contact your vet right away, as your Chihuahua will need medical attention for this condition.

Chihuahua health problems can be quite serious but sometimes difficult to detect. One problem that is almost exclusive to the Chihuahua is very difficult to see in the beginning stages and get quite serious if untreated.

Fluids go back and forth from the brain to the body in any animal and in the Chihuahua these fluids can sometimes get blocked causing a swelling around the brain and severe discomfort for the dog. This can usually be found with regular appointments to the vet but if you notice your dog behaving strangely then get it to the vet right away.

Many toy breeds of dog can get crystal in their urine and this can cause a blockage and major health issues. A Chihuahua shares this potential condition with the other toy breeds but some health issues are exclusive to the Chihuahua.

So keep an eye on your Chihuahua and make sure you take them to the vet on a regular basis.

Dog Diabetes Medication

Filed under: Pets — Ray Lam @ 2:53 am
by Ray Lam

When you have a dog you have a big responsibility to that dog to make sure that they are taken care of. So you need to know how to take care of a dog. Taking care of a dog is not hard it is just a lot of work at times. This is not something that most people worry about because they love their dogs so they happily take care of them. So do you know how to take care of a dog? What about if you have a dog with diabetes? Do you know how to care for a dog with diabetes?

This illness causes a dog’s body to be unable to breakdown glucose (sugar). If not managed properly, this can cause the sugar level in the dog’s blood to be either too high or too low. The most devastating effects of this come in later stages if the diabetes in the dog is left to worsen: blindness can occur. Loss of digits, such as toes can happen as well because of improper blood flow to limbs. This can also cause kidney damage and heart disease. The final stages of an untreated diabetic dog will be death.

You need to make sure that they get enough exercise. Dogs need exercise in order for them to stay healthy. There are a couple of different ways that you can do this. You can play with them or you can take them for a walk.

You also need to make sure that they get whatever medicine, such as flea medicine that they need as well as any shots that they need. This is to keep them healthy. So you will have to take them to the vet to make sure they are well taken care of.

Giving your dog a shot of insulin can cause blood sugar to drop (hypoglycemia). Your canine may start to shake. Keep a small container of Karo syrup or honey on hand. Rub on his gums until he stops shaking. If this happens, head to the vet immediately.
