Avoiding A Pet Store And Buying From A Rottweiler Breeder

Filed under: Pets — Fiona Kelly @ 8:40 pm

When you have made the decision that it is time to get a Rottweiler puppy you are encouraged to buy from a reputable Rottweiler breeder and avoid a pet store at all costs. There are so many things a young puppy needs to know before it can adjust to your home and a pet store offers nothing in the way of getting your puppy ready to go home with you.

A pet store is great for getting all kinds of supplies you may need for your pet but they should never sell living animals at a pet store and there are a lot of reasons why.

The different humane societies in the United States refer to places called puppy mills as the sources of puppies for pet stores. In a puppy mill there is no regard for good breeding and in some cases there is no regard for sanitary conditions. Dogs are bred constantly and thrown into a cage and then sold to you. The results can often be very sad and tragic.

A reputable Rottweiler breeder is going to be able to answer your questions and help you get your new Rottweiler puppy off to a good start. The breeder has probably already started the puppy on its way to getting used to being in a home so that all of the excitement and noise of a new home won’t overwhelm a dog from a Rottweiler breeder and your dog has a great chance at being a fun family pet.

There is very little chance that the pet store clerk you are dealing knows any more than taking your money and giving you your receipt. They don’t have any information or advice to offer and probably have no clue how to raise your puppy. Your puppy has never been out of its cage or at least out of the pet store and there will be a long and frustrating adjustment time for you and the puppy when you get it home.

A reputable Rottweiler breeder will monitor the health of the dogs they are raising and make sure that you are getting a dog that is as healthy as possible. A puppy mill puppy is more than likely going to have health problems as they are not properly bred and they are not properly cared for as newborns. They are product bred for profit and that can lead to many problems.

To a pet store a puppy is a product supplied by a puppy mill. They have no idea if the puppy is healthy and, honestly, once you pay your money they do not care either. Your chances of getting an unhealthy puppy from a pet store are very high.

If pet stores would just settle on selling pet supplies and left the selling of live animals to qualified people who care then everything would be find. But they do not do this and they insist upon keeping puppy mills open by selling their product. Do yourself and the future of puppies everywhere a favor and see a Rottweiler breeder for your next puppy.

Join The Fight To Stop Puppy Mills.

Pet store temptation – we have all suffered from it when viewing the cute and curious menagerie of animals on sale. Do you ever give some thought to where these animals come from?

In a relatively small number of cases that might be true, but the fact remains that puppy mills supply huge numbers of puppies every year to pet stores, internet sales and even apparently reputable dog breeders’ sites. What is a puppy mill? you may ask. The answer may shock you.

A complex of small cages and run with the express purpose of breeding dogs on a rapid cycle. Scores and scores of puppies are bred in this way to end up in the window of pet shops across the continent. The lucky ones, that is, who survive.

Poor health, temperament issues and hereditary diseases are often the legacy of being bred at a Puppy Mill. Socialization rarely occurs as the puppies are taken away from their mother early, thus depriving them of these skills.

Add to this negative early start poor feeding and possibly inadequate water, coupled with miserable living conditions with no room to move and little contact with humans, before being taken often incredibly long distances to the pet store, during which many die.

Responsible breeders will be aware of any hereditary factors which affect a particular breed, and will screen and selectively breed their dogs, always putting the welfare of their animals, be that breeding stock or pups, first. They will ensure puppies receive the correct medical attention and shots before selling them to a properly screened home.

They should be able to provide a breeding line for the dogs, papers and any other information necessary for looking after the puppy. In addition, pedigree dogs should come with a guarantee, each breeder will differ on this, so check your small print, but the guarantee should not require you to give back the puppy if he falls ill.

There is no such ethos at the Puppy Mill, where money talks fast and loud. They breed dogs regardless of health, disease or family history, which is a recipe for disaster.

The mothers may have the worst of it, as they must carry puppies every time they are on heat, and there is no escape from the poor nutrition, lack of medical care, housing or breeding cycles. When the females are no longer useful, death or abandonment generally awaits them.

Although there are laws Puppy mills still flourish. The only way to stop them is to remove the demand by refusing to buy a puppy unless you know its origins, or if it is from an animal shelter.

It is imperative that you don’t buy a puppy from a mill to rescue him. It is creating a demand for another puppy to be bred into a life of suffering. Contact the appropriate bodies, and demand they take action.

Puppy mills only exist because of the end consumer, so buy puppies responsibly and ask some tough questions the next time you see puppies for sale.

Training A Dog For Children Now Can Avoid A Problem Later

If you have kids and want to adopt a dog, then training a dog for children is something you need to think about. There are a lot of families out there who have had an event happen between a dog and child that now causes tension and uneasiness. Children and dogs are not always compatible together. Certain dogs may not be comfortable around children or may not be trained properly at all, causing safety issues. Anyone who has children and has thought about adopting a dog has probably raised the concern as to whether or not that would be best, or if its better to forget the idea.

Luckily you shouldn’t have to forgo getting a dog just because you are afraid it won’t get along with your kids. You may have a dog that gets along quite well with your kids and one that your kids will love! Most dogs are well tempered and enjoy playing with children, the key is to pick one that likes kids in the first place.

It is not difficult to train your dog to be both great company and a great playmate for your child. In fact, training a dog for children involves little more than teaching it not to bite and not to jump on small kids. However, both your child and dog will need to learn some basic behaviors for living and playing together.

A dog that does not display unnecessarily aggressive behavior is a good idea if there will be small children in the home. If they have a calm and easy demeanor they will be more easily trained to play and cooperate with your children and you. Children must also know that the new dog is not a plaything; it is never a good idea to subject a new dog to unusual rough play as they may become violent or scared. Your dog should not feel the need to defend itself by biting your child nor should they fear your child.

If you are bringing a new pet into your home, it would be good to have a series of talks with your children beforehand to let them know how to treat a pet and how to be gentle and considerate of the pet’s feelings. If they have had pets before they will understand this but you can still let them know that a new pet will be a little scared and unfamiliar with them and so they should take it easy with their new pet. It would also be smart to supervise the children and the pet at first to make sure neither one is too aggressive or hyper.

Along with training a dog for children, you need to choose a dog that has the right demeanor in the first place. When you have little kids, it’s good to take the potential new dog’s personality into consideration before reaching a final decision. A dog that is playful yet well-behaved is the best match for your kids.

What You Need To Know About Siberian Husky Allergies

Filed under: Pets — Andrew Preston @ 6:11 am
by Andrew Preston

Being a responsible dog owner means taking the time to understand and recognize Siberian Husky allergies when they start to show themselves. The Siberian Husky as a breed is normally a very healthy dog but they can develop some of the allergies common to many other breeds and only a trip to your vet will be able to narrow down the allergy and then outline a treatment. Don’t let any allergy go unattended, as they can get very uncomfortable for your dog.

Skin allergies are huge problems in the dog world and they are definitely a concern when you are talking about Siberian Husky allergies. A skin allergy is very easy to notice if you are looking for it. But if you are not looking for it, then by the time you notice your dog can be in rough shape.

With skin allergies there can be rashes on the skin, patches of hair missing, or the dog just always seems uncomfortable. The cause of these allergies can range from diet to something in the dog’s surroundings. Your vet will determine the cause and treatment.

An allergic reaction to food can take many forms and if you feed your dog something new and they seem to have a reaction to it then never feed them that again and get to the vet immediately. It is difficult to tell how far an allergic reaction will go so get vet treatment right away.

This is more of a condition than an allergy, but it is very common in Siberian Huskies to develop hip or elbow dysplasia. Dysplasia is when the bones in the joint do not develop properly and over time it becomes difficult for the dog to walk or even move. There are things your vet can do so get your dog treatment right away if you notice these problems.

In the same vein as the skin allergies come the Siberian Husky allergies to fleas and flea activity. That is why you should always take your Siberian Husky to the vet if you start to notice skin allergy symptoms because treating a flea allergy is different than a skin allergy. So, as was mentioned previously, if you notice skin allergy symptoms like rashes or patches of fur missing you need to get your dog to the vet right away.

Your dog hates living with allergies as much as you do so if you start to notice unusual behavior from your dog then get them to the vet right away to diagnose the problem and get the necessary treatment.

Allergies can be complicated and only your vet can really know for sure what is going on so don’t trust any one other than your vet and be sure to get your dog in for an appointment if you think they may be suffering from Siberian Husky allergies.

Why Learning How To Stop Dog Jumping Activity Is Critical

Filed under: Pets — Lee Dobbins @ 2:41 am
by Lee Dobbins

One of the most annoying behaviors that a dog can exhibit is jumping. Annoying as it may be, many experts say this is simply the dogs way of getting closer to you. Even if a large dog has the best intentions, it can be a very scary thing and it may be in your best interest to find out how to stop dog jumping behavior before something bad happens.

The reason your dog jumps up is to have a better view of you. You can minimize this behavior by lowering yourself so that you are at his eye level and then he will not have the desire to leap up at you. While this is a solution for you, there are also the neighbors or strangers that you encounter in public places and naturally you want to prevent your dog from jumping at them. In order to insure that this does not happen, it is necessary to train your dog properly so that he will respond to your voice commands.

Many people want to learn how to stop dog jumping behavior before they have even trained their dog in the basics. When training your dog to stop jumping on you or others you must make sure that he is properly trained in sitting first. It will be to difficult trying to teach your dog two commands at the same time. Be patient with your pet and diligent, soon your hard work will pay off.

When training, you need to pay attention to the signs your dog is giving to you. Many times you can tell when a dog is about to jump up on you. Before they jump, give the ‘Sit’ command. If they disregard the ‘Sit’ command, and don’t worry if they don’t listen right away, lift your knee to the dogs chest to block the jump. The command used in combination with the knee is ‘Off’. Be sure to use the command ‘Off’ rather than ‘Down’. ‘Down’ is a different command to make a dog lay down and if used here, will give mixed signals to your dog.

The next time your dog comes to jump on you, just gently raise your knee to prevent him from getting to your body. This should throw him off balance and cause him to drop to all fours. Gently and firmly say “Off” as you are doing this so he will associate the word with the action. If he tries again, repeat the command and the action. Always praise him and tell him how good he is even when he is not sure of the command, he will eventually understand the action, the command and the reward and should stop the habit of jumping on people.

Dogs who jump on everybody they meet are going to create an unpleasant incident sooner or later. Such behavior is specially dangerous around elderly people and young children. So take the time to learn how to stop dog jumping behavior if you do not want the risk of a lawsuit, or worse. And enjoy you dog.

These Pug Health Problems Can Be A Serious Matter

Filed under: Pets — Lee Dobbin @ 1:05 am
by Lee Dobbin

Everyone loves a beautiful, snuggly pug, right? They couldn’t be more perfect with their crinkled up face, little piggy tail, and amazing personality! However, if you are contemplating owning a pug, one must consider that there are complex Pug health problems that come with owning this beauty.

Part of what makes the Pug so adorable is their flat face, but it can also cause a few problems. The shape of the face and the way the eyes protrude may make them prone to ulcerations if they touch the food bowl or anything else. This isn’t a huge problem, just something to be aware of.

The Pug’s face shape can be related to the problem of an elongated soft palate. In a Pug, this soft tissue at the back of the roof of the mouth can be longer than it should be, and can restrict the airway. The wheezing and odd breathing that is common in Pugs can be one symptom. It may also cause loud snoring and coughing up their food. Thankfully this can be corrected with surgery.

Two other Pug health problems are much more serious.

If your dog shows the signs of muscle weakness or has difficulty is simply taking a walk, he/she may show signs of this disease called Pug Dog Encephalitis which affects the brain through inflammation. If your Pug is around the age(s) of 2 or 3 and shows these signs you should take your dog to the Vet as quickly as possible as it is known as a killer among the Pug community

The other is called hemi-vertebrae which is a congenital abnormality. If your dog has this abnormality you will probably have to euthanize him. While there isnt much you can do about this, you can avoid the heartbreak of adopting a dog with this condition. The abnormality can be detected by x-ray. What happens is that the vertebra do not mature properly, causing a spinal imbalance. As the dog grows this imbalance causes pressure on the spine which can lead to paralysis of the hind legs.

These possible pug health problems should be definitely take into consideration by anyone contemplating adoption. On the other hand, it shouldn’t be weighed too heavily, because only a small amount of pugs will endure these terrible issues.

Dog Behavior Questions – Training Behavior Understood

Filed under: Pets — Lee Dobbins @ 5:14 am
by Lee Dobbins

One of the biggest dog behavior questions centers around training style. Your training style and attitude greatly affects your success of training your dog. Sometimes more so than your dogs attitude does!.

I can’t think of anything that requires more patience (except perhaps for raising children) then training a dog. Most people don’t have a lot of patience naturally so along with training your dog, you might have to train yourself as well!

You will need to have training sessions daily in order for your dog to learn a new skill. The minimum amount of time you dedicate per day should be a half hour, but an hour would be optimal. However, if you are finding yourself losing your patience, you should end the session, regardless of how long this session has been.

Strive to length that ‘time to boiling point’ a little an each day. Remind yourself you are dealing with a dog. Even the most an easily trained breeds or individual dogs an understand at roughly the level of an average two-year old persons. Of course there are those rare an exceptions.

When it comes to dog behavior questions, you need to go back to nature. In the wild, dogs are pack animals. Their pack has a hierarchy. The alphas are the leaders of the pack. The omegas are passive and often behave fearfully. There are also individuals that fall in between those two extremes. If you intend to successfully train your dog, you must be the alpha in your pack. At all points, you must be training your dog. Don’t let your dog train you. Even if it feels like that is happening, you must still actually be in charge.

When training your dog remember you are working with your companion. Be firm and assertive not angry or abusive. You are teaching you dog how to act towards others, including children and your neighbors. If you get upset and fail to be persistent you and your dog will fail.

There are dogs who are naturally easy to train, but not all of them will be this way. You need to have patience and remember that your dog wants to please you. Keep up on it consistently and your dog will eventually follow your instructions.

You must remember that when training a dog you must be patient and take your time. If you expect them to learn quickly you will be greatly disappointed. They cannot remember things as you and I can even a small child can remember more then they can. So remember to take your time and learn your dogs limits and eventually they will get the hang of what you are trying to teach them.

Remember when training your dog to take his breed into consideration along with his age. All dogs are unique and have their own personality. You need to work with your dogs traits whether he is naturally lazy, inattentive, or a youthful pup.

The best way to train your dog is by working with their unique personality traits. Do not yell at your dog needlessly or use strong physical punishment whenever they don’t immediately obey. This will not help train your dog. In the end, training is about building trust with your dog so that he will obey you by choice rather than through fear.

The Pomeranian Breeder And The Pet Store

Filed under: Pets — Rosie Allan @ 4:53 am
by Rosie Allan

The Pomeranian is quickly becoming the most popular small breed dog in the world today. These dogs are known for their fluffy coats, and their elegant demeanors; but are becoming more so known for their affectionate and playful natures. Even in Hollywood the people can’t stay away from these precious little dogs, and we see countless starlets and celebrities walking their precocious balls of fluff right beside them down the red carpet.

Unfortunately, this increased celebrity has left a wide open market for the dishonest Pomeranian breeder. Though many people are unaware of it, a respectable Pomeranian breeder has a long list of responsibilities that he or she must adhere to in order to produce only the healthiest of pups. These responsibilities are for the protection of their puppies, as well as for the protection of the new owners. Sadly, most people don’t realize these responsibilities are so important, and impatiently purchase their new dogs from a pet store.

Purchasing a Pomeranian from any place other than from a highly respected Pomeranian breeder can be a dangerous move. Pet stores are supplied by mass breeders who run centers known as puppy mills. These mills have one purpose, which is to produce as many dogs in a single sitting as possible.

An honest Pomeranian breeder will put each person who wants one of their pups through a rigorous screening process in order to make certain that they will give the best care possible to their dog.

Quality Pomeranian breeders are most concerned with the health and quality of life their pups have, and often will refuse to sell a potential buyer a dog if they don’t feel they can provide the best home.

Don’t be fooled by pet storeowners who do their best to tell you that their puppies only come from an honest Pomeranian breeder. These pet storeowners are highly trained in answering that question, as the world’s awareness of the atrocities of puppy mills grows. But nevertheless, do not be fooled when a pet storeowner tells you that he or she only buys from a local breeder. You’ll only set yourself up for heartache when your new dog turns out to be potentially fatally ill.

A Pomeranian is a wonderful dog that can provide you and your family with a long and happy relationship. When you make certain to only get your new dog from a well respected Pomeranian breeder, you do you part to help make sure your new dog will be healthy; but also to help stop the puppy mills from making any money.

If everyone were to refuse to buy puppies from the pet stores, the dishonest Pomeranian breeder would soon find himself out of work.

Make sure that you know as much Labrador information as possible because the last thing you want is to make mistakes that can either waste time and money, or harm the animals that are involved. This is vital in making sure that you are a success in your adventure.

Now that you have done a lot of reading and asking of questions, it is okay to begin trying to start the Labrador breeding process. Remember, just as anything else in life, patience is needed in order to make it through without bumps.

Always remember that the health and happiness of the puppies that are born in your home is just as important as the adult dogs that you are using for breeding. Labrador care should always be your top priority, even if it means that you have to spend a little more money.

You also need to remember that it is your job to make sure that the puppies are placed in loving homes with people who intend on taking good care of them. It is a nice idea to put together a nice little checklist of things for the new owners to remember.

By typing up a quick Labrador information and care sheet, you are giving that puppy one extra and last chance at having the best life possible once they leave your home.
